Negroni
An Italian aperitif, the classic Negroni cocktail is made with equal parts Campari, sweet vermouth, and gin.
Ingredients
- 1 ounce Campari (2 tablespoons, see note 1)
- 1 ounce gin (2 tablespoons)
- 1 ounce sweet vermouth (2 tablespoons, see note 2)
- 1 orange twist or wedge for garnish
Instructions
- In an Old Fashioned glass filled with ice, add Campari, gin, and sweet vermouth. Using a bar spoon, gently stir. Garnish with orange twist.
Notes
- Campari: This Italian liqueur is extremely bitter with notes of cherry, cinnamon, clove, and orange peel.
- Sweet vermouth: A fortified wine (made from grapes) that tastes sweet and bitter with notes of botanicals (herbs, roots, and barks) and caramel.
- Yield: This recipe makes 1 cocktail.
- Glassware: The Negroni is traditionally made in an Old Fashioned glass, a 6-ounce to 10-ounce glass tumbler. Similar to a rocks glass or lowball glass, the Old Fashioned glass is decorated in the cut glass style.
- Big batch: To make a batch of 8 cocktails, combine 8 ounces (1 cup) Campari, 8 ounces (1 cup) gin, and 8 ounces (1 cup) sweet vermouth in a pitcher. Have ice, glassware, and garnishes on hand so guests can help themselves.
- Americano: The other famous Campari cocktail, an Americano skips the gin and adds a splash of soda water instead. Garnish with an orange twist or wedge.
